Leafnode

Leafnode is a software package that implements a store & forward NNTP proxy (client and server) that supports TCP connections across IPv4 and IPv6. It can be used to give a regular newsreader offline functionality, merge news articles from several upstream newsservers for newsreaders that only support one server well and avoid duplicate news download for a small LAN with multiple users reading news. Leafnode is intended for use at home or in small offices. Scalability for large user or newsgroup counts has not been a design goal. Leafnode is easy to install, requires no maintenance and can run unattended. It will recover from most problems without user intervention if possible. No configuration of a newsfeed at the upstream server is necessary, leafnode looks to the upstream server like a regular newsreader program. Leafnode will automatically figure which newsgroups are read locally and will download them, and it will stop downloading from these newsgroups if they haven't been read locally. It allows for simple filters to limit the number of articles downloaded, the size or exclude articles with particular headers (Perl-compatible regular expression match). It has a mode to optionally download only headers in a first run, lets the user mark these through his newsreader (note that not all newsreaders will work) and download the full article texts in the next run. Leafnode works perfectly with most common newsreaders either via NNTP or with traditional spool access. Leafnode is an open source package and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and probably most Unix flavours.

Super NZB

The Downloader SuperNZB’s Downloader Window can be opened from the File Menu. The list of Usenet servers that you see on the Downloader is created when this window opens up. It looks at the servers you have set up on the Servers window, sees which ones are “active” and then uses the “connections” number to create the list. Each line you see is a “connection” and each server will usually have more than one connection. SuperNZB takes the server name you entered, and then adds a dash, and a number for each connection to create the server name you see here. So, if you have entered the TechSono server with five connections, you will see: TechSono-1 TechSono-2 TechSono-3 TechSono-4 TechSono-5 If you change something on the Servers window, you must close the Downloader and then re-open it to see the changes. You can turn a connection on-and-off while the Downloader is running via the check-box at the left. The State column shows what the connection is doing. First, it connects to the server, then it sends your username, then your password, then asks for a post, receives a post, etc. The Errors column shows the number of errors the server has returned on that connection. These are server & handshaking types of errors, and don’t indicate whether or not the file being downloaded is corrupt. They are usually nothing to worry about, but are an indication as to how reliable the server is. Read more on the Error Handling page. The MB column shows the total number of megabytes downloaded by that connection. The Speed column shows how fast the current post is being downloaded. This usually starts out slow and then increases since there is some time-consuming handshaking that must go on as SuperNZB asks the server for a post. Next to the Speed column are progress bars, which show you how much of the current post has downloaded as a percentage. Half-way means 50%, etc.

Want to download thousands of pictures while you sleep? Just point JpegJet at your favorite Usenet pictures newsgroup, click the “Start Downloading” button, and then sit back and let it do all the work. Later on, you can sort through the new files and decide which ones you want to keep using a viewer program such as WatchFast. Using this method, you can review dozens of pictures per minute. This is the only way to keep up with modern newsgroups that have many thousands of pictures. JpegJet can even eliminate the duplicates (which can be as much as 50% in some newsgroups). Just turn on its DupeNuker option and it will put all the duplicates it finds in the trash.

URD (Usenet Resource Downloader)

URD is a program to identify, locate, and download binaries from usenet (newsgroups) through a web interface. It utilizes the spotnet protocol [Read Spotnet, Spotweb]. Similar to the spotweb client in nature for finding and identifying NZBs, URD additionally includes its own native download and unpacking engine, making it different from Spotweb. While some other programs offer similar services (e.g. Ninan, Sabnzbd), URD doesn't need external NZB files to function. URD lets you subscribe to newsgroups, and will then automatically analyse those articles to form downloadable 'sets', consisting of all the files belonging to a specific upload. These sets are displayed, and through point and click you can be downloading a binary in no time. That isn't to say that NZB files are unsupported. URD allows both exporting of NZB files (from a set, for example) and importing.
